Suarez should be banned from participating in the final should Uruguay make it beyond the semi-finals - that goes beyond a professional foul, and FIFA should consider taking legal action against him for bringing the game into disrepute.

FIFA can't do anything to him that's not in their rules... but the rules should be changed. Goal + red card would be a much better rule for situation like this. Why should any team get a chance to save themselves after a blatant rule breaking that should produce a 100% goal if rule wasn't broke. It's not 90% or 99% goal is 100% goal since he was on the goal line.

It would be much better rule than this one, this is just not fair.
Banned for what? He got the punishment, a straight red, Ghana got the penalty. Gyan missed it, he should have scored. The rules of the game are simple and everything was done according to those rules. He didn't simulate to earn a penalty, he used his arms blocked a sure goal and was red carded. That's the end of that. Gyan missed, you should be pissed at him.
No i think he desrves the usual punishment red card + the FIFA banning him for the rest of the competition. So he will be ban for the semi and for the final, maybe he ll get more ban for other international matches.
But yeah he did well, sacrfice himself for the team, took a bet and it worked, lucky and smart!
When i think about it, they may go further because its in world cup, the world is watching and they can t let those kind of unsporting behaviour set as an example. We ll see soon enough!
it should have been counted as a goal and Suarez redcarded. A player who does this type of things should put his team into a situation of loss, not into a situation of chance, no matter wether a player can score a penalty or not. this will bring yet more outrage to this world cup where it shows that the rules of the game are outdated because of a useless dictator, Blatter

no way he should be banned! The rules clearly specify what happens in a case like this, and he got exaclty what he bargained for: a red car and a penalty. It´s not like he injured another player nastily or punched the referee. Any other player from any other team would have done the exact same thing. And it´s not like he dove like a goalkeeper would in order to reach the ball... the ball actually came directly toward his upper body. Call it speculation, or instinct protection of his face...either way, there isn´t and there shouldn´t be any other punishment other than what he got
No way is that deserving of a ban? He got the correct punishment. It's silly to put a rule giving a goal and a red card when the ball didn't cross. Pointless really. This is one rule that should be left unchanged, it makes the game totally interesting. As for missing the finals, if Uruguay do get through to the finals, Suarez will be playing. Red cards are only 1 match suspensions, plus all red cards are wiped for the finals, that's a new rule. Think it is an excellent rule. People if you need to be angry, be angry with Gyan, he missed a penalty for chrissake.
I insist: like Luke said, the penalty is the reward that Ghana got for such a fault. Simple as that. Same thing when a goalkeeper or a defender tackle an opponent who had a sure chance of getting the ball into the net, or even a handball inside the box by a defender. Guys, don´t let the emotions set forth by such a dramatic game get in the way of rational judgement. I agree that there are outdated rules, particularly the problem with the use of technology on controversial calls, but there is no room to discussion on this type of situation. A real problem would be if the referee or assistants failed to see it, or didn´t show a red car and/or didn´t grant a penalty shoot for Ghana.

As Luke said, Suarez got his punishment, a red card + missing the semifinals (most likely Uruguay's last game), and Ghana got a chance to make it up with a Penalty Kick - which has more than 80% rate of success - and he MISSED. He missed his chance, he buckled under pressure, he failed! Don't try to make a bigger deal by adding even more punishment to Suarez.

Gyan chose power over accuracy, signs of a powerful yet not-so-smart player. If you disagree with that, please see Abreu's penalty kick.
Until the Rules of Football are changed, Suarez did what any other professional player in his position would have done - taken a red card to save his team - This is no different from bringing down a player in a scoring position with an open goal - It's an act of utter desperation -
Don't forget he saved the goal twice !!!
The first attempt was legal -
The second ??? no time to respond ???
In Uruguay at least, he's a hero - they'll probably give him a medal - He converted certain defeat into a slim fighting chance that ultimately became a victory.

My heart goes out to Ghana ..... BUT....
The Ghanian penalty takers were atrocious - Did they deserve to advance after that display ?? How many penalties did they miss ??? I lost count ................
Exactly! How do you call yourself a professional soccer player if you can't kick a descent penalty kick? Beyond the play of chance that goes along with PKs, their kicks were awful. I'm glad they lost.

HAHAHAHA! This reminds me of Maradona's god of hand. people clearly knows it wasn't a goal, and Argentina shouldn't have won that world cup, but no one cares about that. Maradona was counted as a goal and no red card. If you think Suarez cheated, think again. He got a red card and Ghana got a penalty and they missed. Sucks for them. End of story. Besides, FIFA doesn't even care about the Hollywood action in Brazil vs Ivory Coast between Kaka and Keita, Keita should be banned forever, and nothing happend to him...What Fifa should first focus is using video technology. that is the most unfair game in soccer. Offsides, diving, goal not being count, etc...... Suarez deserved what he got. Ghana's the idiot for missing the penalty.... very ironic that usually teams who got red card losses.... I guess not in this case. The handball is part of the rule in Fifa world cup. You can't do anymore than that. What pisses me off is the offside goals, hollywood action,, diving, etc... Fifa really need to fix that.
FIFA can't invent a rule after the fact. Suarez simply exploited a stupid loophole. I agree the rules should be changed.

In Rugby if a certain try is prevented by a delibirate offense, a penalty try can be awarded. Football's rules should allow for something similar (as well as taking other leaves the books of Rugby and other professional sports, including using TV replays, post match citings). As long as football remains in the stone age, things like this will happen.
